idol worship

At Alwar, Swami Vivekananda became acquainted with Maharaja Mangal Singh. Initially the Prince had no faith in the Swami. There was a heated debate between the two. "Swamiji, I have no faith in idol worship," said the Maharaja. The Swamiji replied, "An idol is only a symbol. It is not something to sneer at. Every devotee has his own way of realizing God. It depends on the individual's devotion." The Prince was not satisfied with Swamiji's explanation. There was a portrait of the Maharaja on the wall. The Swamiji asked the Diwan (chief minister) by his side, 'Whose picture is that?" "The Maharaja's," replied the Diwan. Vivekananda said, "Spit on it." The Diwan was taken aback. "Why are you unhappy?" asked the Swamiji. The Diwan thought this man was certainly mad. Swamiji explained: "After all, the photograph is just a shadow of your Maharaja. It is devoid of flesh and blood." "But then it reminds us of the Maharaja, does it not?" said the Diwan. Wisdom then dawned on the Maharaja. He apologised to the Swamiji.

Diversity in Unity

Continuing its agitation for the cause of sons of soil, Raj Thackeray led MNS has written a letter to the SBI for considering locals for the new jobs. "We have written a letter to SBI administration demanding consideration of locals on priority for 1100 clerical posts announced by them," MNS general secretary Shirish Parkar said.

SBI is holding an entrance exam on Sunday in the city and the administration has assured the MNS to speak to the authorities in Delhi regarding their demand.

"About 1.5 lakh applications were received by SBI and 70 per cent are outsiders. The posts are local and Marathi people should get priority for that," Parkar said.

MNS had also raised the issue during railway board exams last year, which took violent turn as the party activists attacked 17 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai, and chased away candidates from north India.

A second charge sheet in the multi-crore Satyam scam will be filed soon as the CBI team probing the case has returned from Mauritius with some bank details from the island nation. The CBI team had gone to probe the alleged diversion of funds by disgraced Satyam founder B Ramalinga Raju to the country for further re-routing back in India to the fictitious firms set up by the accused, official sources said.

Funds were re-routed back to India via European countries as "investments" in nearly 300 alleged fictitious companies floated in the name of his relatives, they said.

The CBI, which is probing the Rs10,000-crore accounting fraud at Satyam Computer Services, has found during its investigations that Raju had diverted big amounts to Mauritius -- a tax haven --from where the money was brought back to India via several European countries, sources said.

CBI sources said this would help the agency in filing the second charge sheet against the accused which will include some more bank transactions made from the island nation.

They said the amount of Rs7,800 crore mentioned by the founder chairman of the firm in his "confessional statement" earlier this year was far less then what was emerging out during the investigations.

The second charge sheet may highlight some more financial transaction made by Raju and some of his associates, the sources said. CBI filed the first charge sheet on April 7 this year.

The sources said the money was routed back to India through some banks in the United Kingdom and the remittances to these banks were made from these tax havens.Raju is alleged to have transferred the money in several salary accounts into fixed deposits in four banks and transferred them to banks in Mauritius.

The money was ultimately routed through Lakeside Investments and Lakeview Investment companies to front companies, including Maytas Infra and Maytas Properties, they said.

The CBI, after filing the second charge sheet, will later travel to the US and probe the transactions made in the current account maintained in Bank of Baroda's New York branch, and a non-existent balance of Rs1,733 crore has been found till date.

The CBI has sought help of US authorities to obtain details of accounts of Raju and his kin, believed to be in the Bank of America. The details of the accounts, after being procured, would be submitted before the court in Hyderabad, sources said.

The CBI, which set up a multi-disciplinary investigation team, including officials from the Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate and RBI, has claimed the money involved in the scam is nearly Rs 10,000 crore, more than what was stated by Raju in his confessional note in January this year.

Raj the Rebellion

Raj Thackeray and his men are at it again. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief has warned the newly elected legislators in the state assembly of "dire consequences" if they refuse to take oath in Marathi."The house will come to know what my MLAs can do if anyone dares to take the oath in any other language," Thackeray said. State Samajwadi Party chief and legislator from Govandi and Bhiwandi Abu Asim Azmi is keen on taking the oath in Hindi. But he clarified that he respects Marathi and Maharashtra. "I have been living here for 40 years," he said. "Now that I have been elected MLA, I will start learning Marathi."

Thackeray said it was time for Maharashtrians to take lessons from Karnataka. "In Karnataka, a Marathi-speaking minister was expelled from the cabinet as he could not speak in Kannada," he said. "Will our legislators show the same attitude about Marathi?"

He criticised chief minister Ashok Chavan for performing a puja of Sathya Sai Baba at his official residence, Varsha. "The CM should have performed the puja at his residence," he said. "If such things continue, Varsha will turn into Aastha channel," he quipped.

He expressed disappointment at the delay in the formation of a new government in the state. "There is no need to apply president's rule," he said. The 13 MNS MLAs have elected Bala Nandgaonkar as their leader and Vasant Gite as deputy leader in the state assembly. Nitin Sardesai will be the party's whip.
